چکیده

Abstract Representative elementary volume (REV) is defined as the usual size of a rock mass structure beyond which its mechanical properties are homogenous and isotropic, behavior can be modeled using equivalent continuum approach. Determination REV complex problem in engineering due to definition ambiguity application area. This study one first attempts define for jointed masses It aimed numerically search ratio between characteristic an pre-existing joint spacing, two most important contributing elements assessing REV. For this purpose, four hypothetical cases were investigated RS2 (Phase2 v. 9.0) finite element (FE) analysis program. An underground circular opening with constant diameter, open-pit mine varying bench heights, single height, powerhouse cavern known dimension executed possible changes safety factor total displacement measurements under several spacing values. Different cut-off REVs calculated FE models depending on type excavation measurement method. average 19.0, ranging minimum 2 tunnels maximum 48 slopes, was found numerical analysis. The sizes significantly larger than range values (5 10) commonly reported relevant geotechnical literature.

Microplane damage model for jointed rock masses

The paper presents a new microplane constitutive model for the inelastic behavior of jointed rock masses that takes into account the mechanical behavior and geometric characteristics of cracks and joints. The basic idea is that the microplane modeling of rock masses under general triaxial loading, including compression, requires the isotropic rock matrix and the joints to be considered as two d...

Variation of Failure Mechanisms of Slopes in Jointed Rock Masses with Changing Scale

This paper demonstrates the ability of Shear Strength Reduction (SSR) analysis based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) to model the scale effects of discontinuity networks on the stability and failure mechanisms of slopes in blocky rock masses. Through three examples, it shows how these mechanisms depend on joint network geometry and change with increasing slope height. Introduction Scale Effe...

Determination of residual strength parameters of jointed rock masses using the GSI system

The Geological Strength Index (GSI) system, proposed in 1995, is now widely used for the estimation of the rock mass strength and the rock mass deformation parameters. The GSI system concentrates on the description of two factors, rock structure and block surface conditions. The guidelines given by the GSI system are for the estimation of the peak strength parameters of jointed rock masses. The...

Laboratory and Numerical Modelling of a Jointed Rock Mass

Laboratory tests were performed on 54 large size specimens of jointed rock mass under uniaxial loading conditions. Based on this experimental study, a methodology has been suggested to estimate strength and tangent modulus of rock masses through a weakness coefficient. The methodology involves mapping of joints in the field and laboratory testing of intact rock specimens to arrive at rock mass ...

Numerical Investigation of Effect of Rock Bolt Angle on Shear Behavior of Rock Bridges

In this work, the effect of rock bolt angle on the shear behavior of Rock Bridges is investigated using the particle flow code in two dimensions (PFC2D) for three different Rock Bridge lengths. Firstly, the calibration of PF2D is performed to reproduce the gypsum sample. Then the numerical models with the dimensions of 100 mm * 100 mm are prepared. The Rock Bridge is created in the middle of th...
